Mindfulness at Work: What Are the Benefits?
Tucango Team Β· 3 min read

After a year of the pandemic, working from home, and considerable uncertainty, many people's mental health has been affected. A study conducted last year shows that at least 70% of Chileans experienced work-related stress despite most of them working remotely. Contributing factors included increased workloads, greater pressure from managers, and job insecurity.
Efficiency and productivity have also declined significantly. Studies indicate that the average worker loses between 30 and 150 minutes a day to common distractions, amounting to as much as 20% of the workday.
The good news is that excellent practices can help reduce both stress and a lack of concentration at work. For those who are unfamiliar with mindfulness or do not practice it, we will explain the basics and share a few simple techniques you can try today.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a practice based on meditation and training our attention to become more aware of what is happening in the present. It involves paying attention intentionally without analyzing or judging events, instead staying focused on the present so we can fully participate in it.
Why bring mindfulness techniques into your workday?
Some of the main benefits we can gain from practicing mindfulness during our work activities include:
- Stronger leadership skills, emotional intelligence, and teamwork.
- A greater willingness to improve the team's well-being, leading to higher job satisfaction.
- Lower stress levels and greater satisfaction from a job well done, with less anxiety and fewer interpersonal conflicts.
- A greater ability to concentrate and pay attention, resulting in fewer errors in everyday tasks.
- Significantly improved memory and communication skills with coworkers.
3 mindfulness techniques you can start practicing today
Although mindfulness is a deep practice rooted in self-awareness, some techniques require no prior training. Here are three basic exercises, each with a specific purpose, that you can start at any time.
1. Mindful breathing
Find a quiet place and begin breathing mindfully, focusing your senses on the sound of your exhalations. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
Look at your abdomen and watch it move with your breathing. Focus your attention on this movement until your mind has settled.
2. Focus
Take a deep breath and slowly count down from 10 to 0, listening to the sound of your breathing and your voice as you reach the end of the count.
If your mind wanders, start counting again until you can complete the exercise, fully aware that you have said every number in a steady tone and rhythm, aligned with your breathing.
3. Stay alert
Find another person or a moving object in your workplace and focus on their or its movements. Observe and consider the reasons behind those movements, concentrating your mind on what you see.
